Understanding Laser Tattoo Removal: Process, Pain, and Post-Care Guide

Explore the effective process of laser tattoo removal using ND Yag Q Switch lasers, suited for different ink colors. Learn about the procedure's sensations, expected outcomes, side effects, and essential aftercare tips.

How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

Every color of ink requires a different wavelength of light and energy to be efficiently removed.
The ND Yag Q Switch laser is a high-powered laser that can operate at 2 different wavelengths, making it effective with darker and brighter colors like red and orange.

The treatment breaks down the ink particles without causing damage to the skin. This is achieved by a Photo-Acoustic effect created by the impact of the laser energy delivered with very short pulses to the targeted ink. Over time, your body’s natural healing processes (the lymphatic system) remove the ink fragments from your body. This allows your tattoo to fade with only minimal risks of scarring or skin

How It Feels (Does It Hurt)?
Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, but the level of pain varies depending on the individual's pain tolerance and the size and location of the tattoo. Some people describe the sensation as similar to being snapped with a rubber band, while others compare it to a hot grease splatter. However, most people find the discomfort to be tolerable and worth the result of having their unwanted tattoos removed.

What To Expect After Laser Tattoo Removal?
During tattoo removal you will notice a 'frosting' effect giving the skin a chalky appearance, this is a completely normal reaction, indicating that carbon dioxide is being released from the skin.

Straight after tattoo removal, the area will be red and slightly swollen, this is completely normal and painless and may stay like this for a few days so don't be alarmed.

In the days following the tattoo removal treatment, there may be a little itchiness, some redness, and slight blistering in some cases but clients are fine to go about their daily routine. The lasered area will feel tender and sensitive at first but these symptoms will wear off within a few days.

What Are The Side Effects Of Laser Tattoo Removal?

Blistering
Some clients experience blistering during the healing process, this is normal and nothing to worry about, it's a natural response of the body to the laser energy, and usually lasts for a few days before the blister ruptures. Do Not attempt to pop the blister, it is important to let it resolve naturally. We will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your skin during the healing process.
Swelling
Swelling is a common side effect after laser tattoo removal. It usually subsides within a few days and can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers. If the swelling persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it's important to contact your healthcare provider.
Redness/Purpura
When undergoing laser tattoo removal, it is common to experience redness and purpura (purple discoloration of the skin) in the treated area. This is a normal reaction to the laser energy breaking up the ink particles in the skin. The redness and purpura should subside within a few days and can be managed with ice packs and good aftercare. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your laser technician to ensure proper healing.

The White Stuff Called Frosting

The white frosting you see right after a laser tattoo removal session it is very much a good thing.

This is a result of small gas (carbon dioxide) bubbles rising to the surface of your skin and this reaction indicates the laser is penetrating the ink effectively.

It also shows that your body is reacting and healing quickly. The frosting reaction fades after the first few sessions.

How To Look After The Treated Area Following Treatment?
Aftercare for laser tattoo removal is crucial for the healing process. It's important to keep the treated area clean and dry, avoid direct sunlight, and apply any recommended ointments or creams. It is important to follow any additional instructions provided by your laser technician to achieve the best possible results.

What are the aftercare requirements and what should I expect after treatment?

There will be redness and swelling and a white frosting over the tattoo straight after treatment. This is perfectly normal and indicates the treatment has picked up the ink. The area may then scab over and could take up to 2 weeks to fully heal.
  • Keep the treated area clean and dry
  • If there is any discomfort apply an ice pack or cool clean cloth to sooth the area
  • The aesthetician may provide a dressing after the treatment and will give advice as to how long to keep this on the area
  • Make sure clothes are not rubbing the treated area
  • Do not expose the treated area to heat such as hot baths after treatment
  • Swimming should be avoided until the area is fully healed
  • Do not scratch the skin treated, if scabs form these must not be picked, or secondary infection is possible.
  • Do not expose the treated area to direct sun exposure or sun beds. If going out in the sun cover the area with a sterile dressing
  • Do not use occlusive dressings or creams on the treated area.
